You are the only one in this thread who has used the word 'gay' here. 'Wank' was the original term - used in the context of bling/cost versus function.

That depends on how you define 'know'. I've never met Bashir face to face, but I'd be happy to go fishing with him anytime. I have 'known' him on these boards for at least 8 years. So what do I 'know' about him then?

1. All of his builds are about function. He uses bling, but form always follows function with his builds.
2. None of his ideas about rod building have ever been conventional. He has been recommending Gloss Coat from Bunnings as an epoxy for years. Take his (and anyone elses) advice with a grain of salt.
3. Bashir and I only agree on things about 50% of the time. I still like to hear his opinions though. They are very insightful, even if not always right or conventional.

But if must know it all started off when i got myself one of Ian Millers sticks, feel of that rod was 2nd to none that i'd used not just the grip the way he cuts the blanks so i indulged myself & builtup sets of rods for 37, 24 & 15 kg & whoever picks up one of those rods will allways comment how good the leather grip feels opposed to their hypolon grips.

Yeah that is what makes Millers rods so good - the way he cuts the blank. It couldn't possibly have anything to do with the fact that he designs his own blanks (not available to us mere mortals) nor could it have anything to do with the fact that he is a rod building super-freak.

If you've never used a leather grip on a rod it's simple you do NOT the right to compare them

I have used, built and repaired leather grips. I love leather grips. Interestingly I did a repair recently on a 130lb chair rod for another Fishnetter. The rod was built many years ago by a fella I think was named Liaropoulos from FNQ. As I understand the rod had been used on a Cairns charter boat for a good many years. The whole rod had been coated in finish, but it had a rough texture to it much like a marlin's bill.

The leather foregip had worn through all the way around at the centre of the foregrip, but what caught my attention was that the underside of the rod between the foregrip and stripper guide had been worn smooth. Which left me wondering who had been wearing things out - the angler while fishing or the deckies while moving rods between holders/chars etc?

quote]My Game sticks are imacculate & so are their roller etc, same cant be said back when i had gamesticks with hyperlon grips[/quote]

Good to hear. Nothing worse than seeing a perfectly good set of rollers rusting over and seizing up. Some people do not deserve rollers. Usually these same people should not be allowed near anything sharp either.

If a person likes the look of leather grips on a rod & wants to indulge himself in purchasing that's his choice

That sounds like much better reasoning for having leather grips than 'because Ian Miller uses them'. Stu's reasoning is rock solid. Personally I love leather foregrips on any game rod - if only for aesthetics alone. But most anglers I have been out with, following the capture of a Marlin or Tuna, are whining about a sore back. Not sore arms/hands (AKA w@nkers cramp) laughing-fish.gif laughing-fish.gif laughing-fish.gif

When i said I put crap on my rods I was referring to when I build them.... I put metallic trims, colourful winding checks, etc... all bling or wank ie they serve no purpose other than to look good.
Like I said, the theory makes sense, I'm happy to be proven wrong on the topic. But I've never felt that my hypalon grips were causing me discomfort in a fight? If your hands are hurting that bad you should be harnessed up - its a more effective way to fight a fish anyway. I mean you don't see leather grips on Japanese GT rods (think I saw a precision with one though), Jig rods etc... and their fights can draw out for just as long as a marlin.
I would still like to know the reason for putting leather grips on a 130 chair rod...

One of my rod building mates has a couple of jig blanks made up with 80lb game style handles on them both with leather grips and harness lugs on the reel seat. He uses these with his saltiga 6500 expedition at full lock.
Odd looking rod with such a large dia handle and small dia blank but the whole kit is very functional and easy to hold.

Hi all, I have built a stack of strokers over the last few years and to be honest putting a leather grip on is quite easy It's just the cost involved that puts most people off. I have never built a 130 so I don't know why most come with leather but I think you would struggle to find a good hyp or duralon grip with a large enough internal diameter to easily slide down a 130 blank without distorting it's shape. If it's an expensive rod like a 130 would be then might as well go leather coz it's simple to do and looks great.

That is pretty much most of the 'real world' reasoning right there, although there are genuine reasons as per Stu's post. By the time folks pay for blank, rollers, aluminium butt/seats and all the other bells and whistles (I won't call them 'wank bits' wink-fish.gif ) then a few extra bucks for an elegant leather foregrip becomes a natural choice for the angler, even if the reason for making that choice is not necessarily 'correct' wink-fish.gif

I wouldn't want my wife's hot little butt cheeks to get sweaty and stick to the leather now, would I wink-fish.gif

But I'm starting to think you really do get it now happy-fish.gif

Jaygee -

I was a professional tennis player.

VERY few pros use leather grips. Everybody uses synthetic over grips because they are more stable. In fact, most pros rip any leather (undergrip) off a factory racquet and build up the grip using synthetic material before overgripping with a synthetic grip. Tourna Grip was THE grip - and still is. All my racquets were stripped down, grips modified, frames modified, strings changed. I would get 8 weeks out of a frame then it was binned and back to the sponsor for new frames. This is typical around the circuit. Thanks for bringing it up though, you are right, there are lessons you can apply from tennis grips to rod grips. Anyway in relation to grips. The wilson prostaff range used to come out with a leather grip because Wilson were trying to appeal to the traditionalists - it was nothing to do with functionality. Federer uses a similar frame today, notice the leather grips are gone...

Sorry guys, I argee with Bashir, Leather is a natural material and will break down like a natural material and change shape/swell etc like a natural material. You can use as much conditioner as you like, in the end, it won't stop this process.

If your hands are hurting when fishing 24 stand up fishing, and you refuse to a harness then I suggest you are not using the gear to its potential and could probably go down to 15kg and fish it more effectively. The fact of the matter is very few people can fish 24kg stand up properly and even less can fish stand up 80 properly. But they still try and fail. Without a harness you have even less chance.

The real question is, if you are getting sore hands (and you refuse a harness), you should look to the shape of the grip. This is what leads to fatigue, rather than what it's made of.

The fact of the matter is, leather is more expensive, and people automatically think that because it costs more, it's better. Well it's your money to waste fellas - so happy saving and wasting happy-fish.gif

David dont get me started with my tenis jokes laughing-fish.gif

Each to their own tastes & if a person wants leather grips why shouldn't be able to have them esp after factoring in all the other conponents confused-fish.gif

Not really the case @ all, tenis players are sweaty little men who need head bands & wristbands, no different to when leather was used on golf clubs they've also gone synthetic there's wrist movement with both & grip is of the importance.

On a rod you have cork under covered with a layer of epoxy for leather to adhere to it's a pretty solid base.

It all gets back to the Ferrari, would you order one with cloth interior or go with the look & feel of leather confused-fish.gif confused-fish.gif

OK

Agree that people are entitled to use whatever they like. If people want to use a leather grip because they want to (for whatever reason even if it might not make a whole lot of sense - but they just "want to" then I am not going to stop them). cool-fish.gif

As to the second part of your response. Leather is not stable compared to a synthetic - Just like timber is not as stable as carbon firbe. I agree that synthetic materials give superior grip (which is another reason why you would go to synthetic on a rod isn't it? i.e to give you superior grip?) wink-fish.gif

In relation to the sweaty little men comment - even if that was the case (and it's not - as different people sweat at different rates generally), I guess that would mean they probably use superior materials because of that fact? There is no wrist movement in tennis, the wrist is kept in a line if you break your wrist you can not physically hit a forehand/backhand/volley. There is some pronation on the serve and overhead, however this has no bearing on grip. Even if it did, and for some reason breaking your wrist diminished the physical ability for the fingers/hand to grip the racquet handle as well as when the wrists are locked (which meant synthetic grips were needed instead of leather grips) - then, this would mean that synthetic grips are superios to leather grips.

If it all gets back to the ferrari and that's the reasoning, then, that's fine, lets leave it at that and agree that sometimes, peoples own personal utility is irrational in other peoples minds. For you, you might think that leather grips are the shot, and that's fine and you like ferraris. For me, I like synthetic grips (for all the reasons given above) - I also like nissan GTRs with cloth seats as they're faster than ferraris and i get more bang for my buck. With the left over change between your nissan and my ferrari, I can buy a full set of rod, some lures, electronics, a boat.

I just wish I was one of those sweaty little tennis players. I would be retiring about now, I wouldn't have to work again, and could spend my time fishing. The only tough thing about it would be having to put up with all those tennis jokes about being small and sweaty! cool-fish.gif
