Go for a ride in a few of your choices SH, that's the only way your going to find out what you prefer best.

Just remember, when a cat bangs, like they do, you'll need a new pair of kidneys.

Cheers

Marty

Hey Hi-Tide, its not a race, but when the whether takes a turn for the worst I want to be confident I can get back to the safety of land quickly.

Thanks for your opinion Mellul. I think I need to try a few different boats. hopefully I can tee it up at the boat show.

Now Wildfish........
Sorry if I lost you Wildfish. Forget about the reference to the 28ft cat - I just pasted that comment made by someone else who has experienced cats and monos first hand. That is the type of experienced advice I was looking for.

You wrote "You need to decide on the size you want, then the budget then move from there."

Size is around 6m but then would a 5.4m cat outperform a 6m HH mono? Its an important factor.

F#$K the budget. I want my next boat to be a performer. I want this to be worthy upgrade. I would be so pissed off if I purchased a HH600R which gets passed on the way to P2 by an old $15 000 shark cat. And we both know which will be the more stable fishing platform.

Mate it could happen angry-fish.gif An old sharkcat with XOS two strokes will probably leave you for dead I'm afraid. Just the nature of the beast.

If your gonna spend up, make sure you know what you want the boat for. If going to P2 is it, I'm not sure why you'd want to spend $90 grand or so just to get there 5 minutes before everyone else ??

Doesn't matter what you get something out there will always be faster or better in someone elses opinion.

From what you have said on these posts, looks like you place a lot of value on the ride factor. I would organize a ride in the following, then look at their layouts, costs etc and go from there. All will take the same sized outboard in the 175 - 250 range. Sounds like you do pretty much what most of us melbournians do which is fish ppb with the odd outing offshore........

HH 600R
Formula 21R
Edencraft Offshore 6.0
Bass Strait Offshore 6.0
Levey Offshore Pro 2

Many of the other boats mentioned (cruise craft, etc) are beautiful and fine rigs but maybe too much bling for what you are after, that's just my opinion.

Thanks Peter 35. I think I need to experience the nature of the beast. Although I have been told they flip over when hit side on???
95 percent of fishing time is in PPB - but I want to head out to Portland and i would not be confident to do that in my boat.

Wildfish, you were spot on when you wrote

You recommended all monos? I have always loved the Edencraft Offshore 6.0. I think I need to experience a cat for a fair comparison before I go any further.

All boats can roll over nothing wrong with cats.
I think a second hand 23 foot cat if you can tow and store it would be perfect for you.
Forget bling just look for a good solid hull with the right cabin, deck and helmvyou can always tweak the fit out to suit you requirements

Mate If money was no object I'd love one of these below. Tried "chasing" one from Greencape back to Eden a few years ago in pretty big seas, along with quite a few other boats including some well known specialty offshore "Victorian favourites". The thing just drove off on everyone and while we were pounding away, it just sliced through - no comparison at all with mono hulls IMO ...
