|

Hey all,
Im looking for advise on how to target makos and tiger sharks... for tag and release.
We have done it a few times in the past basically by heading out to the shelf, putting some bags of frozen burley crap into keeper nets and drifting along with a bait hooked up to a balloon 30 odd meters of the back and another drifting along behind the boat.
Last year we got a few using this technique which was great and we released them all to fight another day... but im wondering if we could be doing more... we seem to spend allot of time looking out the back of the boat talking sh!t waiting for them to turn up.
Over the past year some people have suggested filling the burley bucket and keep that going at the same time as you use the frozen burley in the keeper nets.
Others have said you lob fish frames over the side at the same time.
The other thing is how do you know where to go when you get out to the shelf... Do they follow current lines similar to tuna? Do you look for anything specific whilst your travelling out? I mean if your searching for tuna you keep an eye out for things like birds to give you an idea as to where you put the lures in or start cubing
Does anyone else have any ideas? Your thoughts will be appreciated. |

The winners of Mako comps can't get big boats up on the plane because of the berley they are carrying
Definately some spots better than others - local knowledge helps heaps. Doesn't have to be as far out as the shelf either _________________ Fishermen are born honest but get over it |

Hi Mate,
We just finished filming a segment on targetting Mako sharks on Saturday. We ended up catching and releasing 7 Mako's and 2 Blue Sharks.
The DVD will be free on a leading Magazine next year, along with some other stuff. We will also have some how-to clips in the next week or so which I can flick on to you.
Basically, burley, perserverance and picking your drifts are what is critical when looking for Sharks. Offshore Mounts, reefs and canyons are all sources of food- which sharks will lurk around
Burley needs to be combination of at least 10 x 10kg frozen blocks which should last an hour each, pluss frames and crap to put through pot- another 50-100kg worth.
Then baits should be smelly mullets and tuna, rigged with circles for T and R.
Not breaking your trail is paramount, which doesnt help with some boats in busy spots. _________________ Please look at our youtube site which is free and has lots Tuna, Kingfish and Marlin clips: |

Great! Your kingfish vids have helped us out a great deal. Good stuff!
When you talk about seamounts... is it a good idea once you drift over the seamount to retrace your steps and drift back over or just keep going?
A few years ago we were in a comp off Wollongong and on the first day we went to the shelf, dropped the bags and drifted all day for 0's. That night we spoke to some locals who said head out to 70 fathoms, put the bags in and the sharks will come... which they did but we never found out how they knew how deep to go. Do these guys just know because they fish for sharks day in/out or do they go of the conditions? |

No just keep going, try never to break your trail, sometimes if we must chase leave one block over the side.
Setting up a drift to go through known grounds like canyons etc but you do get people goin through your trail so be mindfull of that.
Baits are really choice, But id say if you have been punching say Salmon through the pot all day id have a slab of salmon or a frame asside.
Makos are Generally not fussy and will eat anything from red rubber gloves to dirty smelly pike thats 10 trips old to everything in between
its the blue sharks that can be a pain in the rear end sometimes so its good to have a abit of choice.

well generally thats all ya can do other than punch some frames through the pot sharkin is a waiting game, as it is now, you shouldnt have a problem in getting multiple sharks up but once they thin out alittle you could be waiting as little as an hour or you could wait all day and see nothing and your just about to packup at 5 and a big jigga will turn up and you forget about the 8 - 10 hours you have stood around talking crap.

I guess another question is do you guys leave baits out in the water or do you wait till a shark comes up to the boat and then select either 15 or the 24kg setup?
In the past we have just left baits in the water... one bait on 24 and the other on 15kg... and I guess we have just been lucky that we havnt caught onto anything massive. |

| If your real keen try mincing gem fish frames at this time of the year and fish right on top of where u catch them. also keep some frames 2 cube out the back 2 get your berly a bit deeper and watch them come up like rockets also better of leaving baits out as watching them come up is half the fun |

The idea of the mince is that it generaly floats alot higher in the water colum, so to get a better mix, punch frames etc through the pot to get it a bit deeper, and then cubes will go deeper again.
punching the pot and or blasting the stez will also add vibrations into the water ....
for Makos mince will generally be enough especially this time of year, but for the Tigers the deeper stuff is essential.
Again we dont soak baits for Makos we will wait to see them before selecting the right outfit between 6- 15kg. for Tigersd we always have a 15 set 30ft deep 60m back
general rule of thumb 150-300fathoms for makos and 80-150 fathoms for tigers
We trialed Circles for the first time on the weekend... and have a 100per cent hook up rate so far, hook just needs to be free to swing but stiff enough to stay wirth the bait... mind you the fish made a mich better account for themselves .
Cheers |
