I currently own a restored 69 model swiftcraft dominator has the smooth side's, not the clinker like the newer versions. I have been toying with the idea of trying to gain a bit more fishing room by cutting out the rear well which will give me approximately 500mm more fishing room and then installing a pod.
I have been doing a little research and found that everyone is installing a complete new transom when doing this type of conversion, generally the transom conversions I have been looking at are in need of replacment anyway, but mine isn't.
My question is, Is it possible to extend the transom cut out to form a flat back instead of completely removing the transom. The way I se it is if I install a pod it will be bolted to the existing transom area and no pressure will be placed on the section to be extended to make it a flat back, plus I plan to overlap the extended sections to add strength aswell.
Any input would be appreciated.

Cut out all the curvy bits so as you end up with original transom with the dropdown only all flat.
I'd then cut a sheet of ply full transom shape but to fit internally which will get glass'd in all that's left now is the infill ply to fill the dropdown part of existing transom & of course the return back into the boat
What i'd also be doing is not finishing it all off untill pod was mounted drill holes remove pod then go to inside of boat & glass in an alloy strips say 100 mm wide x 10mm thick to cover the holes
They'll act as a giant washer when its time to bolt everything up permantly & will stop crushing of glass/ply when bolts are tightened _________________ Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy Cat |

Thanks JayyyeGee, great advise, much appreciated.
In the process of looking at pod design too, an extension of the hull with a chamber at the base for extra boyancy seems to be the go. Just got to find one at the right price.

There's a few comments in relation to motor hight which you need to be aware of prior to working out pod design _________________ Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy Cat |
