We use almost anything squid couta mullet they eat it all. We use 50lb braid on the electrics with rigs made from 300lb or 400lb leader with circle hooks. Weight from 1kg " used most times " plus depending on depth and current. I have marks from 300m to 800m and when looking for new ground set some berley out and have a shark fish while drifting.
No light no bite so we use a few different ones chemical light sticks dont last
For lights try these
There are a few different people in china making these we imported ours direct and have not had any problems but we didnt buy from the cheapest supplier.
We did use some purchased in a takle shop and they wouldnt turn off so its pot luck
Thanks for the info guys. Got the head spinning now. Good links too. I couldnt read the page that showed the rig. Whats the go there. How do you stop it tangling if its going down hundreds of metres?
ANy info more than appreciated

Just use glow sticks if you are in a hurry they work fine and are easy to get. I have used them for a couple of years and have had no problems getting bites, we usually drop in 500-550mts off portland and have got blue-eye, blue grenadere, frost fish but I am yet to get a gem fish or hapuka.
If anyone got a mark theyd like to share with me thatd be great too. Sure i wont clean them all out on ya. Just a beginner with big ambitions.
Thanks for all the advice so far. Its shaping up as a good weekend.
