Hi all,
I was the one who asked whether spiro knew the thicknesses and I am amazed how some people can tell how much a boat will weigh given the thicknesses of the bottom and top sides. Is there some specific formula people use to gauge the weight????? Just curious.

regards
kirko

No Kirko, no formulas that I know of anyway!

Typical dry hull weights are:

565 Sports - approx 900-950kg
6m - approx 1100-1200kg
233 - approx 1550-1650kg

With regards to Kyle's (Dato's) boat, you've just got to remember it was not built by Edencraft so lay up schedules, materials used etc are going to be very different.

Also as Kyles boat has race history, it would be fair to assume that it will be built lighter than many other 233's.

the boat laminate thickness hasnt changed through edencraft owners, they are all built to the survey schedual.so the harry built ,warren built and alan built are all the same thickness.
alan has added one layer of carbon fibre insted of bi axle, thats the only difference.carbon will add stiffness .
233 hull weight is 1650 to 1850kg bare.
my particular hull was built using vynal ester resin at my request ,one of the great things of dealing with a low volume builder like edencraft is they are able to deal with special requests.
the foam floors in my hull were also by request, extra deck and transom thickness was also added to my hull as it is the only 233 rated to 600hp wink-fish.gif

Why vinyl ester resin, Opti?

Vinylester is used for boats that are moored due to its greater resistance/imperviousness to ozmosis. Sorry to jump in there Opti.

yes that and it actually has 30% better adheasion over polyester, which makes the hull stronger without adding weight.
aa the holes ive drilled in my hull ,two were in the keel line and one about 300mm off centre all 25mm thick.
the hull sides are 15mm,the top deck varies between 30mm at the transom back to 15mm at the bow,as bob and others have stated that seems to be the standard on edencrafts,i havnt weighed my hull ,but its over 3 ton ,but its proably got a ton of bling on her laughing-fish.gif ,id believe my hull to be around 1800 kg bare.

VE is also more temperature tolerant and more tolerant to chemical exposure.

It also bonds better to timber, but, of course it's not as good as epoxy adhesion wise!

What is the difference in cost between Vinlyester and Epoxy as Epoxy plus carbon looks to be by far the best way to go.

Hi all, just to clear up a few things regarding the some of the post on here about the carbon used on the Edencrafts, this is direct from Alan Ball and he asked me to post it on here. Cheers Pelagic Boats.

Hi guys
I came up with this blend myself about 22 years ago . we were leadings in composite boat manufacturing here in Australia.
The blend is as follows. Duratek from advanced composites mixed with clear gelcoat 50/50,wait till this goes hard.
Advanced composites now sell this same blend
This will allow you to bond next to epoxy resin without any delamination between the two after curing.
Given we have used clear gelcoat is has UV stabilisers in it.. which epoxy resin does not.
The epoxy resin we use without a doubt the best money can buy and that is MGS resin made in Germany and is used throughout the aviation field.
The carbon is a 12K plain twill weave.
The rest of the layup is glass.
After completion this is baked at high temps to cure
Regards Alan
