I had the same problem as you until I switched to size 6 circle wide gape hooks (owner brand). No need to strike and they get hooked in the lip _________________
1. Chuck a few pieces of bread in the water, some floating, some sinking.
2. Rig up using 6lbs braid with a 1-2m 8-10lbs leader with a 1 or 2 gamakatsu octopus style hook.
3. Pin the hook through the white fluffy part of the bread with plenty of hook exposure. Make sure the bait's not too big so they can take it down in one gulp.
4. Cast in amongst the berley trail and watch for a carp to take your bait of the surface if fishing surface. If you fish a sinking bait, leave the bail arm open and when line starts coming off your reel, flick the bail arm and your on.
5. The rest is up to you...
