Just spent 2 1/2 months fishing the Eyre Peninsula. To catch squid I scientifically reached into my fishing bag, pulled out the first jig that stuck its barbs into my finger and tied it to my line. I used the same rod that I was using for KGW.
The retrieve was very technical....I wound the reel at whatever speed my lazy fingers and wrist felt like doing. The squid would announce their presence by stalling my retrieve. I then winched them in. Real difficult stuff. Sometimes, if the squid were there but not going for the jig, I would tie on a different colour - also chosen very scientifically by educated guesswork. Usually that worked.
I stopped fishing when I had enough for a couple of meals, which was usually two or three squid because they were pretty darned big. The final step was the consumption phase and I was pretty lucky that I didn't break out in boils from all of the seafood I was eating.
Honestly, I think too much emphasis is placed on techniques and tackle for what is, ostensibly, a pretty easy fish to catch. All that remains is for the responsible among us to "fish for the future."
Cheers

Catching squid is fun and all but it's something I let my kids do so they don't get bored while I'm fishing.
Quando... Do you think the japanese were using graphite rods and complex spinning reels 400yrs ago? |

Caveman that is exactly the point. No they weren't using graphite rods and high spec reels then but everything has been refined.
I have caught Kings on plastics so why do I need a jigging set up?
I have seen SBT caught on Coke cans so why do I need trolling lures or deep divers? |

Nice rant rodtip You and freakish aren't the same bloke are ya
I totally agree with the over advertising crap. I dont watch TV, but have glimpsed at a couple fishing shows in the last 12 months, and it is very annoying.
Squid are the dumbest animal out there, and can be tricked into grabbing almost anything. One of my squid outfits I found at the local rubbish tip. Must have caught 300 squid on that last year |

Rod tip,I was like you but sorry I'm converted.
Yep sure there are days the squid will take anything and everything, a bit like the snapper. Like Sunday, we had 40 squid in a couple of hours, the action was so fast I did not time to cast and jig 'egi' style....they were just smashing them in the rod holders. Rods were folding and ink was flying in all directions.
But at other times the squid turn off. The rods in the holders and the jigs on the drift get none. This is Typical when the current totally stops and it's dead calm.
At those times I am convinced that the best jigs, braid to improve action, and fluorocarbon leader and the best techniques will shine. We keep on getting them. Sometimes at the ramp the local experts are gobsmacked when they see our bag and tell us they absolutely struggled to get a few.
A couple of mates and I have invested in top quality jap jigs in a big way, online overseas we get five for the price of two here, between us we must have bought 200 in the last six months and we re stockpiling them for the future
Love my squidding, yes maybe I've been conned but you know what I don't care |

Squid are the second dumbest, one step up from Jelly fish.
I have been using $15 jap jigs which I purchased over 10 years ago.
I only have one of the orginals left but they are identicle in shape, size and weight to the $3 jigs in kmart. They have the same action in the water the only differences I can see is the cheap ones have weak prongs and the eye is not stainless and rusts.
After a couple of squid the new cheap jigs the wraping comes off at the belly, a couple of drops of CA fixes this issue but it shouldn't happen.
IE they might be a good design but they are crap quality and they don't last long.
I have had no issues catching plenty of squid using the $3 jigs. If the squid are around they take them. But with that being said seeing Mick's success and being frustrated with jigs that don't last I am planning on trying some of the new jap jigs. |

these media fishing clowns have just learnt how to fish for squid and dont realise weve all been fishing for them for 30 plus years very very succesfully
2
they are flat out trying to alighn themselves with a manafacturer and get sponsorship deals and or plug their shop etc
keep ya kids wives mates focussed on the big prize the lovely calamari
yippee im a legend at catching them self proffessed and also feared by my quarry and all that know me |

But yet those dumb squids seem to elude so many fishermen
To those who want to knock EGI gear of today
Good guess is you've never used the gear
Cause if you had then you would've realised it's not about ketching you more squids.
It's the ease you get to ketch them with
Bet alot of you lot wouldn't think twice about forking out $600 + for a bream stick yet you have the ordasity to knock that which you dont own
Me thinks you's are amazing _________________ **************************

good guess there im never spending 600 on a squid rod i use my whiting rods that cost up to 600 bucks tops
that 600 dollar rod started off in taiwan or korea as a lonely blank leaning up against the wall when a 9 year old child who works in the sweat shop where he rolls out fishing rods dreaming one day he may work in the i pod factory then it goes to a wholesaler who then onsells it to say paul worstelling then you go in to buy a few sinkers and see a video playing of some one dressed up like a clown catching a squid
got his one fishing glove onhis fishing shoes more badges and prints on his shirt than a nascar driver
and you want to be just like him so you hand over 600 or more on something that cost 10.00 dollars to make and yo pull up next to me and get a bath in ink as im pulling in 20 to your 1 dont make va self feel better bc you got scorched buying crap from clowns and every one else catches the same amount or more at my local peir the boys from springvale have any old rod and use a boat roller for a reel amd they fill up coles bags with squid ftf |
