I believe we need a show of politically based identity strength.
We are Australians. We have "a way" with which we live. A "way" that we are proud of and a "way" that makes us who we are.
Sadly, we appear to be overly willing to allow other cultures to dominate? us under the banner of "culturally sensitive or culturally accepting".
Could this be true? What we have done is seemingly sold out our own identity for others.
When a kindergarten teacher says that we can't speak of "Father Christmas/Santa" anymore because its not culturally sensitive to certain cultures then some Australian eyebrows MUST be raised!!
Please excuse me, but people seeking to join our culture should also be adopting our culture. Maybe not wholis bolis, but in spirit?? After all, if you really don't like where you came from why would you not embrace where you go to? if its immeasurably better than where you came from???
Perhaps it wasn't??
My solution would be to not talk of "turning the boats around" as that simply will not work.
Reducing some of the obscene benefits offered would discourage transit.
In any case our arrivals are insignificant to most other nations arrivals.
I'll ask my friends from South Africa who legitimately migrated to Australia what they think about the "boat people/illegals". I'll post his reply.

so now that we have some concept of what is racism i'm wondering what koorilad, ironmaiden and co think about moves to stop the use of the nativity scene and such during christmas on tha basis it may offend? Is this or is it not an attack on the normal way of life in australia?
Fisho79 we are going off thread.
I understand very well what you are saying.
It’s about the way Islam and every other religion is defended and placed in cotton wool by a seeming larger growing group of political do gooders and our government, except for Christianity.
It does seem as if a group of ‘New’ Australians complain about the nativity seen the government are very proactive in supporting them.
It used to be a standard greeting, ‘Merry Christmas’ and people would reciprocate with a smile. Your religious denomination didn’t matter, or whether you even had one. It was simply a friendly expression in a nation where the vast majority celebrated Christmas. And for those who didn’t, most returned the sentiment anyway because it was just a nice thing to do during the jovial season.
But that’s changed as ‘new’ Australians sense of entitlement exploded. And yes, that included being entitled not to feel “offended” because something may not be to your exact liking.
“Merry Christmas? Well, I celebrate Hannukah or Kwanza or am an atheist, so how dare you presume to wish me your holiday? How offensive and rude!”
What to do?......

I have never been asked not to celebrate Christmas, I have never seen it down played at my children's school etc. There may be a couple of radicals that raise it now and again for a bit of media hype but honestly, for me nothing has changed since I was a child. Everywhere you go at Christmas time it's red and gold and green, every store etc...

You don't know about the problems of muslim migration across europe/uk, you don't think schools are saying no to christmas celebrations .... i guess its easier to speak do gooder if you're eyes are shut to the world around you?

I thought Koorilads reply was honest. With his occupation I would hardly say his eyes are closed to social issues. _________________ Life is like a fish milkshake
