Peter
apologies for not replying sooner, just got on.
I will be leaving on Friday for Hervey Bay, so unfortunately will miss out on weekend. Many thanks for the offer.
So far I have fished the Maroochy River mouth - a lot of bait pickers stripping baits. Saw two nice whiting caught, some bream.
Will be trying the beach IF IT STOPS RAINING -( I'll go anyway).
I cannot believe the number of fellow mex's up here - even met someone from my (current) home town. Can't get away with anything - you never know who you will meet!
cheers

I would think there is some tailor in the mouth of the river by now... beach fishing I can't really comment on but if you fish near to the "Boat Shed" area and spin some baits around that area normally holds a few trevally etc... however I have never really seen the area go off... more relaxing and if you get a fish it is a bonus
For Beach fishing as such I would probably send you to Kawana Beach or to Mudjimba Beach as both of these seem to fish ok at times. |

Boys
moved on from Maroochdore after a few dart on the beach and whiting in the river.
Next fishing spot was Yepoon - got some nice bream in the Ross River - one to 38 cms - Thanks to Paul Cain for his local knowledge, but the rickety pier was a bit hairy for my 110kg manly frame. I will try for some photos.
Got busted off under the bridge at Esturine Lake - locals said barra moving in with the 4 metre tide - its like a waterfall!
Next spot was Shute Harbour from the floating pier in the afternoon and evening - incoming tide. Wrong bait- small prawns and pillies - only small fish, stripeys, etc.
Had a stripey on about 25 cm when a big striped barracuda ripped him off the line, talk about express train arrival.
Rebaited a heavier line, sent out another live bait, and bang! couldn't see what took it but it cleanly bit through the 40lb trace.
Going back tonight with big prawns and heavier gear. Locals laughed at my 12lb line on a snapper outfit - one guy must have had an 80lb handline and he said that it was barely adequte for some of the fish he hooks here.
looking forward to the next instalment...
cheers

Went back for round 2 - incoming tide, just on dusk, equipped with wire traces and big prawn baits.
Dropped a peeled prawn on a light rod down next to the jetty (floating pontoons really) while setting up my gear for the big boys. Next thing its gone ballistic, bent double under the jetty, until ping! burnt off under the jetty. looking good!
Baited up and sent out one full prawn unweighted on my beach rod, and a peeled prawn on a snapper rod.
nothing.
Finally a decent stripey on the snapper rod. Got it to the surafce and about to lift it when it went beserk and dived. Found out why when I got it up, just half a fish, neatly bitten through. Didn't see what kind of shark it was, but most definetly a toothy.
Noy much else happend except one frantic run on the beach outfit, but bitten off above the trace.
Could hear lots of action outside the light spill from the jetty, bait fish jumping and big splashes - saw one huge GT and some barra about 75 cm!
one barra about 50cm hooked and brought o the jetty, but broke itself off under the jetty. One decent catchfish about 3 kilo brought in.
cheers

You have to love those times. God I miss QLD fishing. |

Hi Phil
I fished Shute Harbour 2 weeks ago and caught heaps of queenies of the rocks at the end of Coral Beach but its about a 1hr walk and only passable on low tide. Unfortunately I slipped and buggered my knee so its not without hassles. Also saw 3 Gt's follow a Queenie in and list a longtail at the gaff. I spoke to a local at that pontoon in the harbour and he said he lost a Spanish Mackeral, maybe that's what bit you off. He also said a giant grouper lives under that pontoon. Looking forward to hearing how you go, good luck.
