| Guys, I've got a question for you. I was recently trout fishing on a river. I got up at 4 to get to the spot at 5 and stand in the dark for an hour. We beat another 2 guys there yet they come and set up about 6-8m upstream of us?? They say they will keep out of our way and move on after a while yet there lines keep drifting further and further back until they are drifting there lines right in front of me? Am I unreasonable in saying I was absolutely furious in getting there at that time to get the spot yet not being able to cast my line in? There is over 10km of river yet they fish right next you. Some people have no respect. |

with more and more people taking up fishing, sooner or later you're gonna come across this situation,
just grin and bear it, after all it's supposed to be a relaxing past time, no point getting 'furious' or doing your lolly about it |

What etiquette? Most of the people you meet fishing wouldn't even be able to spell it let alone know what it means, as for angling etiquette forget it last time I witnessed it was OS, I haven't seen it here at all.
Last Saturday I had a bloke casting either side of me then right over my lines, I've lost count of the times some idiot in a kayak has come right to the bank where I'm fishing - they are probably the worst for lack of etiquette people on the water - I'm normally quite polite but now I think there's no point and you are better off giving them an ear full, at least then they know they are in the wrong.
I had the pleasure to witness about 5 blokes the other week who arrived at the river with god knows how many rods, saw 3 of us fishing and decided the best place to set up was right next to one of our number about 3 meters from his rods, but then there was only about 2km of bank space just up from us but who can be bothered to walk 100 metres
They ended up getting told to go elsewhere "you aren't thinking of fishing here are you?" "yes" "NO you're not!"
Put it down to lack of angling education like most of the sports ills unfortunately.

A bit unfair I think CC, by far the biggest losers in this category would have to be the jetski brigade.
Most kayakers (who are also fishermen) seem to hold the same values as us "normal" people.
Unless it's some sort of local problem in your area.
Either way, there's no excuse for pushing in on someone else's spot.

I'm normally fairly forgiving although it still annoys the hell out of me when people move in on your spot, especially when there are kilometres of free bank space that is perfectly fishable. If your spot is taken it's tough luck, you don't fish 5 metres away, you move on and find another spot.
I guess if you don't tell people they're doing the wrong thing then they'll never learn. Can always do it in a non-confrontational way.
Best thing is when you are hauling fish one after another and they're 5 metres away catching nothing getting frustrated
It's usually non fishing kayakers that are the tools. |

They! must own a boat and fish in PPB too.Try fishing in PPB on your own.
Trout are not that hard to know their holding areas etc etc so such areas are going to get busy. The reason your there and then they come there too maybe. _________________

Yes I should clarify that by kayak I meant generally not anglers, although I have had one person come up in a kayak who was an angler and made landing the fish a bit of challenge for me.
Not had any jetski issue's though I can imagine they'd be a bit unruly from the antics I've seen in other places, have to contend with ski boats during the summer but can't complain as they are pretty good and tend to give me enough room, can't see what they see in flying up and down the river like that but each to their own its more their water than mine so can't grumble and actually get on quite well with them when we do have a chat.

Hi.
Yep know the feeling well...
This is what i do, cast over their line, say sorry and real in your line.
Smile, and say let me untangle your line for you.
Then with a knife cut their line.
Repeat as many times as needed.
Yes i DO DO THIS!
Regards.

Haha, I like your style. We all learn and for me that will never happen again, ever. It was my fault I let it get to that. I wouldn't even bother fishing in the same hole as someone else. I'd go over and say g'day but then walk on as they are there first. To fish within 6m of someone and drift your line directly I front of them???? I don't understand some people really. |

Classic statement there champ or have I read it wrong? Are you seriously saying that 100% of the time you go fishing you encounter some sort of uneducated moron who doesn’t show you the respect you deserve!!
I’ve been fishing for over 40 years and must be very lucky because it’s an extremely rare occurrence to encounter the behaviour you seem to experience every time you wet a line. |
