Caught this guy in Dartmouth over the weekend. We actually caught 3 that morning. I was thinking like a different species of carp.

To be honest it actually looks like a cross between a european carp and a macquarie perch.

Perch body shape and top half, head and fins were very dark like a macca. Carp scales and colour on the bottom though.

Any info would be awesome

Tim. That is a Common Carp, a bit different to the wider known European Carp.

You serious? A Common Carp is a European Carp - same thing different name. It's like saying no it's not a Golden Perch, it's a Yellowbelly, or maybe even a Callop.

There are many different strains of Carp, and then all of those strains can hybridize with Goldfish (or even Crucian Carp)

Certainly is an unusual one, looks like a hybrid of sorts with the lack of barbules (whiskers) and no pronounced Dorsal or Anal spines.

Waiting for the usual response "who cares... it's a Carp... smash it's head in" wink-fish.gif

All the rain we've had is the lake filling, if so cold water and Winter what are Carp doing being active, feeding.Or did you catch it in the shallows Tinny0007 being warmer water.

Steve. My attempt to answer the question appears to have upset you somewhat.
Obviously your far superior ability to identify a species would be far greater then my humble guess. After all your knowledge of the fish species should not be questioned.
Therefor I suggest to you to notify the authorities ( you know the scientists who study and name these fish ) to make amends with their mistake at identifying " Carassius auratus Linnaeus " and rerite all their
studies about this fish and ammend them to being the same species as " Cyprinus caprio Linnaeus ".

Fancy them making errors like that, but I'm sure you will inform them of their mistake.

Enjoyed the fight.
Enjoyed its death.

That about sums up the merits of carp.

It looks like a hybrid - I don't mean like a Toyota Prius - Goldfish/Common Carp, in answer to Matt they feed all year round the cold doesn't really bother them unless the water freezes solid, they might slow up a bit but they've still got to eat (the banks) and do their work for Dr Evil.

I note you haven't even smashed its head right in, or run it through the heart with a stake, or shot it with a silver bullet, do you realise how dangerous a hybrid Goldfish/Carp is? I'm surprised it didn't attempt to capsize your boat and tip you in for the other Carp to eat, they are wrong 'uns those Carp. angry-fish.gif
