Have crossed a few bars over the years, the worst being Shallow Inlet at Sandy Pt but have crossed Barwon Heads in a nasty mood a few times too.
As others have indicated there is no rule to follow each time as each time is different but there are some things I've noted.
- Make sure your engine is reliable and further make sure it is warmed up and has had the throttle squirted at least a few times. Had a hairy moment once when I started my old 2-smoker, tootled down to the bar then first squirt to beat a set she cut out. Luckily restarted quickly and got out of the road of the wave but could have been a disaster.
- Hold your nerve - No use once your in the breaker zone panicking and turning around. Once you have assessed and sized up and you are committed you need to follow through. Have seen a few guys nearly come to grief through hesitating
