i fished a 100 days out of billfisher that had twin 165hp mercruisers
a mate of mines got one with twin 15o opties and hes stoked
another mates got twin 250 etecs and said it wasa desth machine
if i saw 4 strokes on one id cry
4 strokes are for oyster and mussel punts dredges and commercial taxis
2 stroke pwer and fuel economy miles better
the only ones banging on about 4 strokes are the people that shelled out 1and a half times what a normal outboard costs and you have to take out a loan to get them serviced

Good one mate i might pull the v8 4 stroke out of my car and drop in a 250hp 2 stroke.

.....er....what has that got to do with the comparison of the two boats mentioned ? But yeah, I can see there is a tendency to over-power boats, most of the time conditions preclude its use anyway. I suppose more efficient engines has led people into bigger horsepower.

Didn't I read somewhere the current 233 built here by Edencraft is some 300+ kg heavier than the early HH models?

At least 300kg! In addition, the HH233 was also built heavier than the original Formula/Thunderbird 233.

This explain in part why there is a tendency to run more power these days.

Having said all of that, quite a few of those produced by EC over the last few years are fitted with twin 175hp Suzuki 4-strokes. They perform reasonably well.

The switch from I/O to outboards means 300kg+ extra hull weight would still have the outboard boat lighter, though.

That's fair, however the EC is approaching 500kg heavier than the original Formula Thunderbird 233 (bare hull) out of the US which worked well with a pair of 165's.

To put the weight difference between the US and Australian built boats in to perspective, it is not uncommon for people in the US to repower a 233 with a single 225hp/250hp outboard and achieve speeds of 45knots at WOT.

Also, back in the day boat fit-outs were very limited.

These days boats are loaded with all sorts of stuff. Take Opti's 233 for example, there would be an additional 500kg plus in fit-out alone over a more typical EC233 which is already approx 500kg heavier than a US built 233.

"Typical" west US coast boating doesnt see the kind of conditions we fish in here, though. To them, generally speaking, a lighter boat is no ride disadvantage

I looked around for one with a single 330 hp M/cruiser years ago, but couldn't find one at the time, still think it would have been a good option if you are happy to cruise about 25 knots, fuel wise.
