Hi all
My mate has a good quality stainless fuel tank which he wants cut down in length.
I am able to do this however , have never cut or welded a used tank and have reservations
I think I have to clean thourly out and purge with argon while cutting and welding
Has any one done this and pls let me know the procedure taken
Thanks all
Martin

Take the tank to a radiator place and get them to bomb it once they do that you can cut it and reweld the tank, do not try and cut it till you get that done or you will be taking a quick trip to the moon.

Sounds like this should be left to someone who understands what it is all about?

No probs @ all doing it yourself tis not rocket science

Only thing that can make the tank go Kaboom is if there's still fumes inside

Easy to rid tank of fumes just attach a hose & fill tank up with water till tank is full & water starts coming out of the most upward tube whether it be breather, filler etc

Fill tank from lowest inlet/outlet point this will aid in forcing fumes up & out

You will still have that petrol smell in tank once water is emptied not a prob tis normal as smell embeds moreso in alloy tank but that smell is not fumes & will not ignite

Cutting the tank is easy 5 inch grinder using a 1 mm cutting disc will eat through s/s like knife through butter

If you're a drunk effected by withdrawal symptons like i'm sure ewe are laughing-fish.gif

Shakey hands & not capable of doing a straight cut just clamp a bit of flat bar [straight edge] & let disc follow the line

When my tank had mods my guy connects a tube from car exhaust into tank and lets it idol for a few hours to get rid of all fumes and traces of petrol before welding. I'd leave it to those who know.

Not really a good idea laughing-fish.gif

Why didn't he just hook a vacume cleaner to it @ least he wouldn't have been pumping more dirty fumes into the tank
