seen a couple videos of guys catching kingies off cape schanck but can't find many/any recent written reports. just bought a new boat and keen on heading out to have a crack at some kingfish as it looks a lot of fun!

anyone here had much success on the kings down there? how far off shore are they etc.

good luck getting much info on vic kingies, those that are lucky enough to
have cracked the code of consistently hooking up Kingies don't usually promote there info, and fair enough they work hard for there rewards. And don't want certain area's thrashed by anglers.

cheers brad

Mako12,

Kingies would be anywhere along there from Cape Patterson to Barwon Heads and have been caught all along. All thge inshore and offshore reefs. I have seen a huge school off Cape Shank in 40 metres over the deep reefs. Dont expect to see them until Christmas on. I caught a Rat Kingie last xmas off Phillip Island near the East entrance. It was on a 2500 reel, and a whiting rod, so was a huge amount of fun.
Use the time to learn the techniques and put the time in, the result will be so much more rewarding.

Look forward to your post showing us some fish.

Be prepared to put in the hours. Study the tides and water temps as it is almost a science and it does mess with your mind.
As I fish out of PPB its hard to get live bait over our way at times.
Last summer I found californian squid did well.
Dropping baits across the bombies and steep drops is a good start but keep baits off the bottom as the wrasse can clean you out.
And yes as the others said anywhere along the Vic. coast is worth trying.
Good luck.
Its awesome when you get your first fish.

Got my first one this yr in westernport and put in plenty of reading and time including doing a charter specifically chasing them. But was totally worth it. As cjmj said its not just a drop the line and catch process. We'll be definately spending more time on chasing them as they are simply awesome to catch. So read up, spend a bit to learn a lot and good luck!
