With cold weather fast approaching there is just enough time to stock up on bait or get a feed of this wonderful species. Here is Simon Kamiskas with the good oil.

Great article but I can’t agree that yabbies are a lowland species or restricted to the western flowing streams. Yabbies sure turn up in some strange places I found some in a pool of water at the side of Byangee Mountain, that’s over 300meters above Yadboro Creek (Nowra).

Traps are generally illegal in trout lakes, a stupid law that should be changed.

I'm familiar with Yadboro Creek.

The upper Clyde system has its own unique species of Euastacus crayfish. They are just that - a spiny Euastacus cray species - rather than a Cherax yabby species.

I'm suspecting you probably saw one of the upper Clyde crays. (They do go high up the system.)

Agree with you on the traps.

Simon

It appears to be little known that you can dig for yabbies on land away from water. Small rabbit warren like hole clusters can be found in the Bush. The holes lead to an underground cavern that contains water. The Yabbies are small and ideal bait size. In parts of Victoria the warren systems have been a hazard to overland travel on horse back.
