Just heard the South Australian snapper opening was a bit of a "non event" with a lot of fishos including charter boats returning to port fishless!
Those prominent fish holding wrecks didn't produce....
Just shows that nature has a it's ways of telling us to ease up!
Glad it didn't spend my hard earned on a trip this year.
Ash, can you confirm this??
Has this been the case for Vic snapper also other than those that keep "smashing" ( ) them?

I think the numbers are down on previous years. I heard the same from some of the wrecks.
The wreck i fished was fairly good. Fish went an hour into the ebb tide and you had to be right next to the wreck. We didnt even anchor just idled in gear over the spot whilst we got our bag. All done in 15-30mins.
Bag limits have changed in SA to 3 fish per boat or 1 per person and no release allowed. Charter boats were filming rec boats releasing fish and i suspect will be passing that footage to fisheries.
All fish were yet to spawn and im thinking that fisheries will close the season an extra month next year.
Is it time VIC Fisheries looks at our boat limits?? |

how's that work, say 4 mates go out fishing, 3 fish per boat, if 4 poeple each catch a fish and you are not allowed to release. so over bag limit, so only 3 people are allowed to fish whilst the 4th member looks on as a spectator?????
seems like a bullshit law |

If thats what you like paul go for it,so evey time you go out with 2 or 3 friends, make sure you only take 3 fish.As i have said in the past, victorias fisheries laws are an over kill but thats what the scientists recomend.
South oz laws sound like a load of crap,if we end up like them im not buying a boat, which clown stops catch & release. |

I had a whisper the other week this was being looked at in VIC, as in you bag out and cant go on fishing for a species. So if dad I get our six reds, then decide to target gummies and Mulloway, with coincidentally the same gear and baits, then what is one meant to do when snapper jump on our lines?
I'm all for a boat limit. You can get three each to a max of nine per boat. Sick of seeing boats crammed with disinterested kids playing on their Playstations just to get the numbers. Charter boats really need to be looked at as well - too many working the bay, and they must bag time after time 3 to 4 sessions per day then post pics on social media of dead fish all over the docks. |

I am not keen on a boat limits, take our last trip for example.
5 on board, all from different families caught 15 snapper ie bag limit moved on to fish for flathead and caught 1 additional snapper as by catch.
Everyone took 3 fish home and we had consumed our 3 by dinner the following day.
Boat limit of 3 would have left people going home without a fish.
As to snapper numbers, whilst it has been a slower start to this seasson and a clear gap in the size of fish caught which releates to the failed spawned due to dredging there still are bucket loads of snapper around.
What I would change is the 10 snapper under 40cm to be a total of 3 regardless of size. I would also increase the minimum size to 30-32cm. |

| I think bag limits should be flexible, even flexible closed seasons. If the research money is put into annual monitoring programs should be a simple matter of maths as to what the allowable catch percentage should be compared to total fish stocks. If its required to ensure the species is fighting fit then closing snapper season should be accepted by all. As for catch and release It should also be based on the figures, if they figure outthe survival rates for fish isnt acceptable then ban it. If its a matter of water depth caught ect and other mitigating factors. I dont know but what depth do they catch most their fish in SA? is baratrauma a bigger issue than in ppb? |

So people like Arno snapper charters that have the PW and Merv onboard promoting the business on fishing shows, so all the fish caught and released is no longer allowed. Who then would bother going out fishing then? _________________
