Been looking at a couple of new boat rods for out in the open ocean... to both lighten things up a bit and give feel than what i am currently using.
Had a look some rods in BCF yesterday, was great to have a place to compare rods side by side and no end of choices (it was actually doing my head in)
I had a short list of what i was looking for before i arrived;
Ugly Stick Platinum BWS1706 and BWS1609 in a Medium $129
Silstar Crystal Powertips PC661SWM 6'6" and PC701SSL 7' (which i quite liked) $119
There was also a Silstar Diamond Tip, for around $159 or $169.. Thing is i can't find the Diamond tips anywhere online or even on the Silstar website??
Are they an old rod? I was really impressed and it was the rod i took to the counter along with the other Silstar, the 7' Light Crystal Power tip.
Another nice rod that fitted the bill was a Shimano Graphite rod that was made just for BCF... It was $79.. Both myself and my mate thought it was a bargin at that price, although still a little thick in the butt for what i was after.
I didn't even start on Dawia for equivalents and the Wilson Live Fibre also looked and felt great, but was that next step up in price.
Although i'd be more than happy to own one.
Any ideas fellas... on the Silstar Diamond tip or even another rod you'd suggest in that size/weight range.
Really looking for something with a thin construction, light weight, with soft nipple style tip but with some reasonable power through the last half to to 3/4's of the rod. But don't want to go all Graphite, really like the combos.
Thanks |

Hugh,
I can pass on some information on the Silstar Diamond tips. I have 3 models and all are over 5 years old and have prodided incredible service on varied fish species.
I have the PK702N, PK701SSL and the PK701SWM. The 702 is a lightweight 2 piece stick great for estuary species such as bream and smaller flatties, capable of fishing both SP's and HB's. Although a little old by comparison to newer and lighter sticks, still catching fish for me.
The 701SSl has been with me for close to 10 years and is my favourite spinning rod from the beach when chasing salmon and tailor, I have it matched with a Penn Slammer 360 and 10lb braid and cast 25-30gm slices.
The 701SWM is an offshore stick used on snapper, kings and smaller YFT although this rod matched with a Spheros 14000 has caught a striped marlin. Generally its matched with a 3500 Shimano Baitrunner running 20lb for snapper and smaller kings, or a Capricorn 3500 and 20lb for smaller YFT or another Capricorn and 50lb braid for larger kings.
Older style of rod but still relative even today, good construction and with Fuji guides etc, great value for money.
Good luck with the choices.

Thanks RTR,
Yes, the Silstar seemed a great value when weighing up price vs action.. especially when it's just going to a boat rod.
Will be using it as my daily driver in 40 to 70m of water with about 7oz's of lead.
Snapper, Mowong, Flathead and Gummys will be its target fish
I was going to through a Shimano Calcutta 700B or Charter Special over one and a 4000 size threadline over another.
Thanks for your input mate, great to hear it from someone that has been using them for so long.
The Silstar 701SWM was sure on my list... |

I realise a Calcutta 400 would be a better match than a 700B... but i'm not sure the 400 will be the business in the deeper water.
Anyway, i can find the Silstar Crystal Blue Power Tips, CB701SWM $176...
But where are the Diamond tips like BCF had? Or is that a Diamond tip? |

Thanks Pete, yes i had look there earlier... put i still don't see these Diamond Tips?
Perhaps it was old stock?
Don't mean to go on about them, but they were my preferred rod when compared to the others... not by much, but they were a little better, softer tip and little more power at the mid way point. |

No worries Salty.
Have to agree re old stock, if they were still available they'd have them listed.
Foe what it's worth I've got a 2000 series Charter Special that I bought new in 1986 and it's been a faultless workhorse. Well worth a serious thought. _________________ Cheers

Thanks mate, yes a friend uses one, i think he has had it for years...
I am amazed how light it is and how smooth the drag is... pretty hardy unit thats for sure and without the extra cleaning hassles of a "bling bling" Callcutta perhaps. |

Just got rid of them recently as i only used them a few times and sold both as new for 4hunj. bet you are happy to know that now . Another good brand of rod i have a couple of are the pelagic rods .Not a top brand but a nice rod none the less. I have acouple of heavier ones i dont use but they are an awesome rod. I'll let you have a play with my rod if you want when i head down there hopefully next week |
