I have a Quintrex runabout on a trailer (5 meter boat) and am considering vehicles that will suitbaly anhd comfortbaly tow 1200kg comfortably. The 2.5 liter Subaru Outback has a towing capacity of 1500 kg......and as I dont want to get an SUV and stay with a car preferbaly....what do you think of them as a sutibale towinfg option for my boat. Are there any other fuel efficient options you think i should look at......thanks

Hello Snapperass,

I have a boat that weighs 750kg and tow it with one of two cars.
A 2001 Toyota Avalon, front wheel drive, three litre, auto. Very good and easy, can maintain 100kph easily, front wheel drive works fine on concrete ramps, dirt ramps are off limits.
Second car, a 2000 Suzuki Grand Vitara.
2.5 litre V6, manual.
No guts at all, will barely do 100kph, need to change down for every hill. Lowrange gearing is excellent for ramps and reversing up the driveway.
If you already own the Subaru, try it on someone's boat or caravan. If you don't have access, hire a big, tandem trailer, they weigh over 1000kgs empty(I put it over the weighbridge).
If all you do is short trips the Subaru would be fine, but then anything that was legal would be fine.

we had a 2L forester which we towed our 4.5m savage with no problems at 100kh. Had to work the gears a bit but it was ok.

we now have a 2.5 forester and it has MUCH more go so i would imagine it would be better.

having said that my trailer was well set up for the 4.5 and a 5m is quite a bit bigger.
